Trophy Brown Trout Trips

The Backwoods Angler has a new and exiting trip to offer for the 2007 season.  I am pleased to offer full day wading trips on the West Branch Delaware River stalking trophy brown trout!

WEST BRANCH DELAWARE RIVER--

Flowing from the Cannonsville Reservoir near Deposit, NY, the West Branch is a tailwater fishery.  Insects abound and numerous types of bait fish are available for the slab brown trout that inhabit its waters.  During the hot, dog days of summer when most flowing waters are trickling with low water, the West Branch receives state monitored releases from the reservoir.  It's typical for water temperatures to be as cold as the low 40's during releases in the middle of August!  All trout are wild inhabitants of its waters.  An occasional rainbow trout can be caught as well as walleye, smallmouth and even toothy critters from time to time. We fish from just below the reservoir downstream to Hancock, NY.  Plenty of affordable lodging is available.

I am now offering 9 hour wading trips for trophy wild brown trout on this pristine river.  The West Branch really isn't a secret anymore, but our techniques for catching 18-24 inch average sized browns is far from conventional.  The strikes from these fish are extremely aggressive.  They slam spoons and stickbaits with amazing force, then, in warmer water temperatures, they perform jumps and runs unlike any browns I have ever caught.   All fishing is done with spinning tackle and is catch-photo-release.  This trip can be quite grueling as we wade all day on some difficult conditions.  The rewards can be very satisfying!  A 5 to 8 trout per day, per angler trip is average, but the trout average 18-24 inches.  Trout up to 30-inches were caught and released in 2005!  And, we have experienced sightings of bear, deer, bald eagles and even a mountain lion.  Nowhere in the entire Eastern US is there a better shot at a true trophy wild river brown trout!

The rate for this trip is $325 for 1 or 2 persons.  Call or email for details.

TROUT FISHING REPORTS

July 21, 2008-

Chris Gorsuch and I ventured up to the WB Delaware for some "cold water" trout fishing.  With water temps topping out near 80 degrees in many area streams and rivers, the cold water releases from Cannonsville Res. keep the water frigid in the headwaters of the WB.  Water was likely in the 45-50 degree range, and despite low flow and a cut off of the releases just prior to our arrival, we managed to land 17 browns and a beautiful 17 inch tiger trout.  At least a dozen fish came unbuttoned from the jerkbaits we were throwing.  Big fish of the day was a very thick 25-inch brown.  The fish these trout exhibited was amazing.  One trout, estimated in the 20+ inch range, hit the jerkbait as soon as the lure touched down in the water and immediately flew airborn throwing the lure!   I have a few dates open in September for this trip, and if interested I can block a few late in August.  Let me know.  (Pics coming soon.)
